We had a question from a 3 Keys\u2019 student<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I have two questions about General Writing Task 1. Isn\u2019t it natural to use \u2018To Mr. ABC<\/strong>\u2018 instead of \u2018Dear Mr. ABC<\/strong>\u2018 when I write a letter to whom I don\u2019t know<\/strong>? I think \u2018Dear\u2019 is a bit more informal than \u2018To.\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When Lindsay<\/strong> begins a formal letter, she just uses the name<\/strong>. Jessica<\/strong> likes to use the phrase \u2018To Whom This May Concern<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have a name, you could use Jessica\u2019s phrase, or \u2018Dear Sir\/Madam<\/em><\/strong>\u2018.<\/p>\n

\u2018Dear\u2019 is standard<\/strong> and is used in formal letters.<\/p>\n

However, IELTS tells you how to start<\/strong> your General letter<\/a>\u2013 so don\u2019t worry!<\/p>\n

Also, this is one little detail<\/strong> to not worry about, because this won\u2019t affect your score<\/strong>. This salutation doesn\u2019t<\/strong> even count<\/strong> as part of your word count.<\/p>\n

His second question is:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know \u2018Mr. ABC\u2019 with a period is right, is \u2018Mr\u2019 with no period also right?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As long as you are correct in either American or British English<\/a>, you\u2019re fine on IELTS.<\/p>\n

Hey, it\u2019s been ages<\/strong> since we hung out!<\/em><\/p>\n

Remember- it\u2019s a short letter. You need all 150-180 words<\/strong> to address the bullet points<\/strong>. So, only use one sentence to open<\/strong> and one sentence to close<\/strong> the letter.<\/p>\n

A huge part of your score is the tone<\/strong> of your letter, so get into the informal or formal mood<\/a> right away with the above phrases.<\/p>\n

A good goal for the rest of your letter<\/a> is to provide at least two specific details<\/strong> per bullet point.<\/p>\n
