Improving my English with you is a pleasure! <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>As a university teacher, I have a new question referring to the set of expressions that I can use at the beginning and at the end of each lecture. &nbsp;&nbsp;What expression can I use to briefly introduce topics at the beginning of the lecture, just to give students an overview before diving into each of them individually? &nbsp;As to&nbsp;the end of the lecture: how can I tell that I&#8217;m going to summarize the topics previously discussed? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&nbsp;How can I tell students to study again the assigned material as to be well prepared for the upcoming exam? A formal presentation would be another great place to use this.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What we\u2019re going to do today is this&#8221;: This is more casual, more human, less formal and \u201cprofessor like.\u201d It sounds more like you are running a workshop but could be useful but it really depends on your class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2) Tell them: Here is you deliver the content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>3) Tell them what you told them:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;To summarize what we talked about today..&#8221;. (swap in \u201cdiscussed\u201d to make it more formal)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I\u2019d like to sum up what we went over in this lecture. (more casual)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Let\u2019s sum up&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;To sum up&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4)&nbsp;<b>Tell them what to do next: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Your assignment for next time!&#8221; or &#8220;Your assignment for next time is&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Please be sure to review your notes before the next class.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;You\u2019ll want to make sure you are familiar with the material before our next class.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slang phrases:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can you say \u201cbrush up\u201d here?<\/p>\n<p>Not exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Brush up is more about when you had a skill and didn\u2019t do it for a while then you went back to it.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not so much about reviewing lecture notes.<\/p>\n<p>What about bone up?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe, but it might sound kind of strange.
