Firstly, is it necessary to completely eradicate your accent<\/a> in English?<\/p>\n

No!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fact is, you can still get an 8 for pronunciation<\/a> with a hint<\/strong> of your first language accent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is because English is an international language<\/strong>, with thousands, if not millions, of \u2018accents\u2019<\/a>!<\/p>\n

However, having said that, if you feel your accent is impeding<\/strong> your ability to communicate<\/strong>, then you should actively try to improve<\/a> your pronunciation.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll know if your accent makes it hard<\/strong> for people to understand you if they often have to stop and say, \u201cWhat<\/em>?\u201d.<\/p>\n

Step #1: Identification<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You know which sounds are hard for you in English<\/strong>\u2013 maybe it\u2019s the \/r\/ \/l\/ differentiation<\/strong>, or the \u2018th\u2019 sounds<\/strong>, or perhaps nailing the long\/short vowel sounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Write<\/strong> each sound that is difficult for you. Learn their IPA symbols<\/a> for clear identification.<\/p>\n

Find videos online by native speakers<\/a> (British or American) that show you how we form<\/strong> these sounds, the exact positioning of our tongue<\/strong>, lips<\/strong>, teeth<\/strong>, and the use of voice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Try to copy their sounds and tones<\/strong> exactly. Look in the mirror<\/strong> to make sure your mouth is in the correct<\/strong> position.<\/p>\n
