Greetings from Colombia and keep doing your amazing work.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our short answer is yes!<\/p>\n<p>We want you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/american-music-participate-english-conversations\/\">participate in your life <\/a>and learning a new language is part of that.<\/p>\n<p>You have to take risks sometimes in the way that you talk.<\/p>\n<p>You have to try to use some cultural phrases or words and you may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-643-stop-making-mistakes-english\/\">make mistakes sometimes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all okay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A quote to keep in mind:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like the quote &#8220;If you\u2019re the smartest guy (or girl) in the room then you\u2019re in the wrong room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How does this apply to today\u2019s question?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re perfect and you\u2019re not making any mistakes then you\u2019re probably the smartest person in the room.<\/p>\n<p>That means that you have to get out of that room and be around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/katias-adventure-story-push-limits-challenge\/\">people who challenge you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You want to start using new phrases then when you\u2019ve heard them being used and you think you understand what it means then use a hypothesis mindset.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the hypothesis mindset?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example: I think \u201ca can of worms\u201d means a bunch of problems that we didn\u2019t see before we opened the can.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s my hypothesis based on what I have heard from natives.<\/p>\n<p>Now I have to go out and validate it by using it and seeing what happens.<\/p>\n<p>You are guessing a bit and using some of your knowledge and information to fill in the blanks.<\/p>\n<p>When you use it you might not always get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/use-word-interesting-give-feedback-english\/\">immediate feedback<\/a> and that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n<p>Do however use your empathy.<\/p>\n<p>Try to sense people\u2019s reactions in the way that they react you when you use it.<\/p>\n<p>Do they look at you with a weird gesture or a weird face?<\/p>\n<p>After observing and listening and hearing this chunk being used, maybe ask a native about it.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure you understand it pretty well so you can try using it as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to use new idioms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of rules to using these idioms in your everyday language and experiences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Try using it at the right time and in the right place but in a natural way.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t force it. Wait until the right situation comes up and then integrate it into conversation.<\/li>\n<li>Consume cultural stuff like TV shows, movies, news, so it feels more natural. See how it is used there so you can get a feel for its most natural applications.<\/li>\n<li>Use the right mindset. Go for connection not perfection. Use experimentation. Find a supportive environment and that does not mean that you have to be with a teacher.<\/li>\n<li>When you are ready, take small risks.
