To score high on Writing, you need to know what words are appropriate and what words are not.<\/p>\n<p>However, we also know that in order to <strong>secure<\/strong> a <a href=\"\/ielts\/high-scoring-vocabulary-ielts-writing-task-2\/\">7 or higher for Vocabulary in IELTS Writing<\/a>, you must utilize &#8220;<em>less common phrases,<\/em>&#8221; with an &#8220;<em>awareness of style and collocation.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Formal idioms satisfy those requirements!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>5 Formal Idioms for IELTS Essays<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">#1: A means to an end<\/span>&#8211; a <a href=\"\/ielts\/questions-ielts-speaking-motivation\/\">way of achieving a goal<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Example: Raising taxes is just a <strong>means to an end<\/strong>.
