It was clearly supposed to be a formal correspondence<\/strong>, as it was penned to a building manager<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In this letter, the writer was to talk about why she rides a bicycle to work<\/em>, problems with parking it in the building<\/em>, and suggested solutions<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Now, in the real world<\/strong>, you wouldn\u2019t explain your reasons for riding a bike<\/strong> in this letter. It\u2019s none<\/strong> of the building manager\u2019s business<\/strong>, and has nothing to do with the parking problems or solutions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The reasons this student gave was that she\u2019d recently gained weight<\/strong> and wanted to lose it, and was told by her doctor that she needed to lower her blood pressure<\/strong> through exercise.<\/p>\n

These are personal health problems<\/a>, and do not strike<\/strong> the correct tone<\/strong> to a building manager whom, supposedly, you do not know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How can we find an appropriate reason<\/strong>, then?<\/em><\/p>\n

Keep it more impersonal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For instance, you could say that as you are an eco-conscious<\/strong> individual you use a bicycle as your main mode<\/a> of transportation. This choice, you\u2019ve found, has made your life more convenient in numerous ways, such as not having to look for a parking space<\/strong>, saving money<\/strong> on gas and parking, and making it through downtown faster than motorized vehicles<\/strong> during rush hour.<\/p>\n

So, when you are brainstorming for your letter<\/a>, make sure that all of your ideas are hitting the appropriate tone<\/a>, according to the intended audience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
