Question 1<\/strong>: Regarding listening, a question said no more than 2 words<\/strong>, and I answered \u2018smart phone<\/strong>\u2018 but the answer was \u2018smartphone<\/strong>\u2018. Am I still correct?<\/em><\/p>\n

Answer<\/strong>: No<\/strong>. Smartphone is one word<\/strong>, and that is the only correct<\/strong> way to write it.<\/p>\n

As an IELTS student, it is useful to know compound nouns<\/a>, as there\u2019s no hard and fast rule about which are 1 word<\/strong>, 2 words<\/strong>, or contain a hyphen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Reading a lot will help you<\/a> become familiar, and remember<\/strong>, the common compound nouns<\/strong> in English.<\/p>\n

Question 2<\/strong>: For writing, how should I write numbers<\/strong> in English? I heard from 0 to 99<\/strong>, I should write out the words<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Answer<\/strong>: There are rules for when to use the numerical<\/strong> form, and when you should spell out<\/strong> the word.<\/p>\n

The different style guides<\/strong>, like the APA and MLA have different recommendations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A general rule<\/strong> to follow, though, would be to spell out<\/strong> the words for 1 to 9<\/strong>, but use the numerical<\/strong> form for numbers 10 and up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But, really, you wouldn\u2019t be marked down either way in Task 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Academic Task 1<\/strong>, however, always use the numerical forms<\/strong>, for all data, for consistency.<\/p>\n

Question 3<\/strong>: What about complex grammar structures<\/strong>? Are they appropriate for an informal<\/strong> letter<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n

Answer<\/strong>: Yes, you still need complex structures<\/a> here. It\u2019s part of your Grammar score<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter what piece of writing<\/strong>, or what part of speaking<\/strong>, you are communicating, you must have a range of sentence structures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Question 4<\/strong>: Is it correct to write \u2018wouldn\u2019t\u2019 instead of \u2018would not\u2019?<\/em><\/p>\n

Answer<\/strong>: You should not use shortened forms<\/strong>, like abbreviations or contractions<\/a>, in Academic Writing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In contrast, in an informal letter for General Task 1<\/a>, you must use contractions<\/strong> to strike the correct tone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Also, in Speaking<\/strong>, you must use contractions in Part 1 and 2<\/strong>; however, in Part 3<\/strong>, as the style should be more formal<\/strong>, you should use fewer shortened forms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
