Are you dealing with a co-worker or professor?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the person is closer to you, you don\u2019t have to worry about changing to British. That person will understand you are mostly learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/listen-southern-american-english\/\">American English<\/a> and see the differences as endearing. Nobody will expect you to change to the other way of spelling or speaking either.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A coworker may be different. It depends what other people in the company or the school do. If one way is the common way used by everyone, you may want to switch over in this environment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>#2) What is the purpose of the writing conversation?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stop to think about who you are talking to and what you are trying to convey.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason for this conversation, and this is instrumental as to how you approach it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is it informal text messaging or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-435-get-email-gentle-nudge-method-english\/\">emailing?<\/a> Go with the same rule as in number 1 and think of the audience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Is it for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-161\/\">presentation at work<\/a> where most people are British? Or for a school assignment for a British teacher ? Consider switching to British spelling and words to make it more formal.<\/li>\n<li>Will the audience understand and accept differences if they exist?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>#3) Will the person get confused by the meaning?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, people know the differences between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-473-site-vs-sight-break-vs-brake-catch-break-comes-english-spelling\/\">spelling<\/a>, like our or are.
