This is useful in both spoken and written English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the definite singular or plural situation, there are a couple of helpful rules.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use \u201cthe\u201d when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking about something specific that all the speakers know about<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLet\u2019s go to the store tomorrow.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Here it sounds like I want to go to one particular store and whoever I am talking to knows which store I am talking about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the a\/an-indefinite-ONE situation, it\u2019s a little bit different.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a\/an when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking about something general<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLet\u2019s go to a store tomorrow\u201d<\/li>\n<li>This is general-it doesn\u2019t really matter which store<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-824-add-flair-english-pronouncing-different-way\/\">Read more about pronunciation when you use \u201ca.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To help you remember: S<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ometimes we can change from \u201ca\u201d to \u201cthe\u201d in one sentence or conversation. The name of the the book is \u201cLearning English.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have a piece of paper? (general\u2013it doesn\u2019t matter which piece) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have the piece of paper?
