Have you heard phrases that make you feel very confused?<\/p>\n

Have you ever heard somebody repeat a phrase or say something in English to show how they are affected?<\/p>\n

It can be quite confusing when somebody is trying to talk about something that really affected them.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to look at phrases that talk about how somebody feels in a more extreme way in English.<\/p>\n

This question is all about this and even gives a real life example that you can probably relate to.<\/p>\n

Hi girls,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Almost one year has passed since I started to listen to your wonderful podcast, through which you\u2019re rubbing off on me. I think of the way that you talk as an example of this, like when you say something like; \u201cI love it, I love it\u201d, or  \u201cfor sure, for sure\u201d. Do you know you often repeat these phrases? I\u2019ve been doing that lately!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

To learn more in an enjoyable way, I\u2019ve been watching TV shows and movies. Last week, I finally completed the whole series of \u201cSex and the City\u201d. In the show, four New York girls often say \u201cI\u2019m freaked out!\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re freaking me out!\u201d I somehow understand what they mean from the context \u2013like, \u201cI\u2019m messed up\u201d?\u2013 but not 100%. Could you tell me the exact meaning? I believe that \u201cSex and the City\u201d is set in mostly the nineties. Is this phrase out of date or still popular?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

If you have more time left on the recording, please tell me what TV shows you recommend. It\u2019ll be very helpful. I\u2019ve once tried \u201cPortlandia\u201d, but they spoke sooooo fast that I couldn\u2019t catch up and lost my confidence in listening. I was freaked out!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Trying To Relate To Real Life Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n

Watching TV shows is a wonderful way to get good examples of how natives naturally speak in English.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s understandable why you question yourself on the popularity of the phrase.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this example, Sex and the City is considered older now so it\u2019s important to think about these things when you are choosing what TV shows to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

You want to find things that are current and that you can relate to.<\/p>\n

To say that something freaks you out is not new, but it\u2019s also not outdated though it\u2019s used on this older TV show.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s helpful to watch TV shows to learn, but know that it\u2019s helpful to find out if these phrases are used as often anymore.<\/p>\n

Different Uses and Ways of Using It<\/strong><\/p>\n

So today we want to talk about this phrase in a different way. <\/span><\/p>\n

We have focused mostly on the phrase \u201cfreaked out\u201d as meaning scared or concerned. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

First of all,  saying something like \u201cyou had me freaked out\u201d does not mean messed up. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s more about being nervous or even unsure. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m freaked out\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re freaking me out\u201d are a bit different in their uses.<\/span><\/p>\n

These could definitely mean that the person is scaring you, or maybe they are in a scary situation such as a haunted house.<\/span><\/p>\n

You might even say that you \u201cfreaked out\u201d when you are talking about something specific like a scary movie.<\/span><\/p>\n

You Can Use This Phrase In Different Situations<\/strong><\/p>\n

In any of the situations mentioned above, it\u2019s likely about making somebody nervous in some sort of way.<\/span><\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t have to be a big deal and we use this phrase in both scary bigger situations, as well as small situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

It can actually be great in conversation<\/a>, and it fits in a lot of situations quite easily.<\/span><\/p>\n

You might say something like:<\/p>\n

\u201cStop talking about how hard Ms. Smith\u2019s class is. You\u2019re freaking me out!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see, these things are not about HUGE fears. <\/span><\/p>\n

These are simply about some sort of anxiety that you feel in the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019re trying to convey some sort of uneasy or anxious feelings that you may experience in that situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Similar Phrases To Say The Same Thing<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are some other ways that you can say something similar in these situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the ways here are used to tell someone ELSE that their behavior is making YOU nervous. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is an important skill for connection and for making conversation with somebody. <\/span><\/p>\n

These should not be used with a boss or at work in a professional setting for example. <\/span><\/p>\n

These phrases are for your friends or family members or anyone who you can be a little less formal that you want to reveal your true emotions to. <\/span><\/p>\n
