I love it so much!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I have two questions about pronunciation as indicated below:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The first one is \u201cOFTEN.\u201d I have noticed many times that Lindsay pronounces it \u201cof-t-en,\u201dwith a clear T sound. We usually pronounce \u201co-fen\u201d with a silent T sound though. So I would like to know which way sounds more correct or native. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The second one is \u201cCHICAGO.\u201d One of my English teachers, a Canadian, taught me that it should be pronounced \u201csh-i-cago,\u201d . In the Midwest you might hear people say pop, while on the East coast or South you might hear soda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Syrup:&nbsp;<\/em>The way that this is pronounced often depends upon the dialect and the part of the country that the speaker is from<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Think It Through If You Feel Uncertain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder that these words and others like it can often be confusing.<\/p>\n<p>When in doubt, take a minute and ask yourself some important questions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-975-dont-make-this-mistake-when-you-receive-a-compliment\/\">Making mistakes<\/a> or feeling uncertain is completely normal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t quite sure though, here are some questions to ask yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will this get in the way of connection? If not, try to hear what others say and go with that, but don\u2019t stress about it too much because there may be more than one right way of pronouncing it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it an easily confused word? If yes, others are probably saying it in both ways. Even natives have trouble sometimes with these common words.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I ask someone? Don\u2019t be uncomfortable to bring this up with the person you are talking to. Most people enjoy talking about different ways to pronounce words.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is the audience? A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-521-keirans-expert-interviewing-advice-3-tips\/\">job interview<\/a>? A friend? If it\u2019s in a professional setting then learning in advance can be helpful.
