I\u2019m doing good in Listening, Writing and Speaking, but my Reading scores are not up to the mark. What can I do to improve my Reading scores?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

First, you need to strengthen the overall comprehension<\/a>, or the understanding<\/strong> of what you\u2019re reading.<\/p>\n

A huge part of this is vocabulary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have the vocabulary<\/a>, you won\u2019t recognize the parallel expressions<\/a> that tell you where the answers are in the passage.<\/p>\n

For general reading, Lindsay recommends Following Atticus<\/em><\/span><\/strong>, about a marathon hiker<\/strong> and his canine companion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019ll pull you in, as it\u2019s an adventure<\/strong>, and, if you love animals<\/strong>, his dog is a big part of the story!<\/p>\n

Jessica recommends The Bazaar of Bad Dreams<\/span><\/em><\/strong> by Stephen King.<\/p>\n

This is great because the writing is amazing, and it\u2019s a collection of short stories<\/strong>. Thus, it\u2019s easy to consume<\/strong>, as you can finish a whole story in one sitting. Most of the stories are not horror<\/strong>, either, but, rather, a variety of genres.<\/p>\n

The main point is that you must develop a positive association with reading<\/a>, so you find it enjoyable and motivating.<\/p>\n

  1. Get an IELTS Reading passage.<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. Write down the answers.<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. Compare the question to the answer in the passage.<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. Highlight the answer and the matching parallel expressions, in the passage and the question. (This gives you insight into how the questions and answers are written.)<\/em><\/li>\n
  5. Every time you come across a key word that you don\u2019t know, put it in your vocabulary notebook. (Reserve 3-4 pages only for these words, as IELTS will repeat certain words!)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
