I work at a children\u2019s hospital, and I sometimes ask parents how many children they have. They live in Texas.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To show that kids is more informal, you really wouldn\u2019t likely say&nbsp; \u201cThis is my child\u201d when introducing an older daughter or son. You\u2019d likely say \u201cthis is my daughter\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, the word \u201ckid\u201d or \u201cchild\u201d is used less frequently than the plural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might&nbsp; say son or daughter when just talking about one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to saying \u201cbuddy\u201d or \u201cbud\u201d, that is perfectly fine for a boy or girl.<\/p>\n<p>You might also say something like \u201csweetie\u201d, which is typical for a girl but can work for either.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone says \u201cdo you mean\u201d maybe it\u2019s not about the word you chose if there is confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If all else fails, you can try repeating it as well for clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be possible that the person didn\u2019t hear you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this example, children and kids are the same but one is more formal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember it\u2019s about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-podcast-listeners-connection-not-perfection\/\">Connection NOT Perfection,<\/a> so just do your best and it will become clear in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have any questions, please leave them below in the comments section.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll get back to you as soon as we can.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard \u201cchildren\u201d and \u201ckids\u201d both used in conversation?
