I\u2019d like to show off a little bit!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thanks for your great show and have a good one.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/transcripts\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/All-Ears-English-Transcripts-208x300.png?ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494&amp;ec7494\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/All-Ears-English-Transcripts-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/All-Ears-English-Transcripts-709x1024.png 709w, https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/All-Ears-English-Transcripts.png 720w\" alt=\"All Ears English Transcripts\" width=\"160\" height=\"231\"><\/a><strong>Make sure you understand every word you hear on All Ears English.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bring your English to the advanced level with new vocabulary and natural expressions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get the transcripts from today\u2019s episode.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn to speak naturally with the American accent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/subscribe\"><b>Click here to subscribe to the transcripts and save 50%<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Helping To Break Through The Confusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever used \u201cI\u2019m good\u201d instead of \u201cI\u2019m well\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>If so you are not alone, and it can be quite confusing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s get into this tricky topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an article called \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-are-you-im-good-is-acceptable-reply-2014-2\">Why Saying \u2018I\u2019m Good\u2019 Is Correct, And Anyone Who Says Otherwise Is A Fool\u201d<\/a> by Christina Sterbenz from Feb. 19 2014. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, the argument is that \u201cwell\u201d is an adverb and \u201cgood\u201d is an adjective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Research Breaks It Down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you say \u201cI eat good\u201d it is wrong because you would use the adverb, well, to describe the verb and the adjective, good, to describe a noun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/how-are-you-im-good-is-acceptable-reply-2014-2\">this article&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;says that with \u201cto be\u201d it is different, because we are connecting the predicate to the subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you say The dog IS small, you are using small as an adjective. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So with to be, it\u2019s different. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You wouldn\u2019t say \u201cI am sleepily\u201d but you\u2019d say \u201cI am sleepy\u201d which is the adjective form. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Different Types of Verbs Make A Difference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may not realize it, but there are different types of verbs that play into this.<\/p>\n<p>There are action verbs and there are linking verbs.<\/p>\n<p>Action verbs are things like drink, eat, watch, and things of that nature.<\/p>\n<p>Linking verbs help to tie or link together words.<\/p>\n<p>A linking verb basically is used along with an adjective because you are linking something to the subject.<\/p>\n<p>These two different types of verbs help you to at least understand some of the basic differences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting Back To The Commonly Used Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So you can start to understand the basic explanation, but we want to get back to the example of \u201cI\u2019m good\u201d vs. \u201cI\u2019m well\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not true that only children use this, though that may be taught in an academic setting.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few things to keep in mind here which can help you to understand which is appropriate and why you might use one over another.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>We focus on conversational English- <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We try to teach you how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-902-answer-phone-naturally-professionally-english\/\">speak naturally.<\/a> First of all, \u201cI\u2019m good\u201d is not wrong, but even if it were\u2013we teach what we hear and what sounds natural to us. This doesn\u2019t mean we try to speak incorrectly or anything, but we want you to focus on conversational English for the most part so you can sound the most natural. In this example, saying \u201cI\u2019m well\u201d sounds a bit more formal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>We use the motto \u201cConnection NOT Perfection\u201d-<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, we want you to connect with others so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-860-3-steps-confident-listen\/\">feel confident<\/a> that you are learning correct and appropriate language.&nbsp; With that being said, we want to teach you that connection is the most important piece, as far as our audience goes and we make that clear. If you are thinking about all the details of good and well, you may miss the chance for a connection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>We speak the way we REALLY speak when we record this podcast-<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do not speak one way on this podcast and another way off the podcast. The only difference may be level of enthusiasm, but that\u2019s because we are on a show and we want to emphasize certain things.
