He listened to one of our episodes and thought that the way we pronounced a word sounded wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Today we\u2019ll dig into it and see if we really made a mistake or if it was just an example of fast native pronunciation.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the letter from the student:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><b>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m in episode 142, but whenever I listen to Ms. Gabby\u2019s speech at first of each episode, I ask myself why in first episodes ( 1 to 77) she said (or I heard she said) \u201cwill you finally gets (s??) a real native conversation\u2026?\u201d. It sounded like a mistake because of fast talking and the way that she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/wash-versus-clean-english-pronunciation\/\">pronounced<\/a> that particular word. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen to the episode for a more thorough breakdown of the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catching a mistake like this shows that the listener is quite advanced and picking up on these little speaking issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These sort of issues can come up often because people have a tendency to talk fast, and that can make it hard to understand sometimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You want to go into conversations ready for fast talking and other issues that may come about when you are speaking with a native.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>One Word Can Make A Huge Difference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These issues are common, but what we want to focus on today is the word \u201cfinally\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally means at the end, especially after a long time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are several instances where you might use the word \u201cfinally\u201d and they all work well in conversation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It could be used to indicate frequency or after a struggle or difficult time\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI tried to fall asleep for hours and couldn\u2019t, but I finally fell asleep around 2 am.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It can be used as an exclamation to indicate a larger expression. It is often used alone in this case as part of a conversation.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI finished watching all of the episodes of Friends that I\u2019ve been trying to get in. Finally!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It can be used to indicate that something took a really long time\n<ul>\n<li>\u201d I don\u2019t know what took you so long, but I\u2019m glad you\u2019re finally here.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It can be used to indicate the last or end of points in a long conversation or presentation\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cTurn right, then left, then finally right again. Then you\u2019ll be at my house.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Similar Words That Can Work Well<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are other words that can be substituted for finally, and they all work well.<\/p>\n<p>These substitutions can be a nice way to mix it up in conversation and try different options.<\/p>\n<p>Practice using these as they can help you in everyday conversations and can of course expand your vocabulary.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Eventually<\/em>: This is like finally but with more of an impact because it can show something a bit more dramatic or more in depth\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI couldn\u2019t find my purse after looking everywhere. I eventually found it\u2013I had left it in my car!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>In the end:<\/em> Not used quite as often, it\u2019s a bit more formal sounding and therefore it\u2019s less common. It could be less about an ending after a while.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe spoke for a while and went back and forth. In the end, we decided to end our relationship.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>After awhile:<\/em> It may not be the end, and so this can be used if there is uncertainty or if there isn\u2019t as much of a deadline is attached to the situation.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAfter awhile we decided to take a break and get some pizza.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>It took you long enough<\/em>! This is a bit sarcastic and may border on rude, but it\u2019s quite common. It\u2019s used to indicate that there was a longer period of time associated than expected.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI waited for you to get to the restaurant for what felt like forever\u2013it took you long enough!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>That took forever<\/em>! This is another common phrase that is a bit more sarcastic in nature. Just be careful about how you use it so that it doesn\u2019t come across as rude.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI stood in line for what felt like hours.
