I find these to be very confusing and could use some help.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thank you in advance.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ciao!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u2013 Ricardo Scottu<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Breaking It All Down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you just have to take it one word at a time.<\/p>\n<p>These are admittedly very close words, and so they are used interchangeably.<\/p>\n<p>If you find yourself in doubt, then there are some helpful ways to break this all down.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Under and below<\/em>:<\/strong>&nbsp;Both mean lower than, or in a lower place.&nbsp;However, under can often mean that there\u2019s some sort of cover (something on top of it). While below may mean there is some distance\u2013BUT, that\u2019s the grammar portion of it. Most people don\u2019t say it as often in conversation because it\u2019s a bit more professional or formal. It is very similar to using \u201cunder\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The purse is beneath the jacket<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Underneath:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>This is also a bit more formal, and it may even come across as a bit more exaggerated. There is nothing wrong with it, but you just don\u2019t hear it used as often in daily conversations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The keys are underneath the couch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Very Similar and Practice Makes Perfect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The point is, these words are VERY similar.<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking \u201cunder\u201d is the most popular and therefore used the most.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath and underneath are used the least, mostly due to the fact that they are a bit more formal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;They are often interchangeable, and you will hear that in everyday conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some idioms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Under<\/em>: Take someone under someone\u2019s wing (mentor them, teach them). \u201cIt\u2019s important that when he starts school this year that Bobby take him under his wing and protect him. He is his older brother after all.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Below<\/em>: Below me- it means it\u2019s not worthy of my attention. It\u2019s less than what I deserve or what I am or perceive myself to be. It can be rude the way that it\u2019s used. \u201cI don\u2019t want to clean the toilet. That\u2019s below me and as a princess, I shouldn\u2019t have to do those tasks. \u201d (could also be beneath)<\/li>\n<li><em>Beneath<\/em>: Beneath the surface, as if to say it\u2019s where nobody can see it or it\u2019s below the radar. \u201d I know he\u2019s trying to act like he doesn\u2019t care, but beneath the surface, it\u2019s very important to him.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Underneath it all: A<\/em>t the core. Almost as if to say that when you take everything away, this is how it is.&nbsp; \u201cHe has a lot of demands, but underneath it all, he\u2019s a good guy and a great boss.
