Great question! This is a huge connection skill\u2013how can you disagree with someone and try to convince them you are right while not losing the connection due to being impolite?<\/p>\n

In Episode 323 we spoke about how to introduce your viewpoint in English<\/a> and the phrases you can say, so today we will focus more on the first part. How can you try to convince someone you\u2019re right.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Today we are going to do a followup on 578 with some additional phrases you can use and a discussion of two important steps. Some of this is a review. Here are two things you can do:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Acknowledge what the person said<\/li>\n
  2. Link what the person just said to why you are STILL right<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We will focus on the phrases, but it\u2019s important to pay close attention to LISTENING<\/a> to strengthen your argument. What you don\u2019t want is to focus so much on what you are going to say that you miss an opportunity to prove your point because you didn\u2019t listen to what the other person said. Also, the person could prove your point wrong and if you weren\u2019t listening and use that as your next argument, you could lose credibility and it will be awkward.<\/p>\n

    So what can you say? These phrases are somewhat more direct than in the other episode. That\u2019s why you have to focus on being strong in your voice but also friendly.<\/p>\n

    Acknowledge:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    -I see what you mean, but<\/p>\n

    -Your argument holds water. However,<\/p>\n

    -That\u2019s a valid point, but<\/p>\n

    -It\u2019s not that I completely disagree with you, but<\/p>\n

    To restate:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    -You have to remember that\u2026<\/p>\n

    -Look at it like this:<\/p>\n

    -That argument doesn\u2019t work because\u2026<\/p>\n

    -There are holes in your thinking..<\/p>\n

    How would these be used? <\/strong><\/p>\n

    You can mix these up and make them your own. My favorites are \u201cthere are holes in your thinking\u201d and \u201cyour argument holds water\u201d or \u201cyour argument DOESN\u2019T hold water.\u201d You can say that too! <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

    Takeaway:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Be kind during a debate, but also strong and dire<\/a>ct. Acknowledge the other person\u2019s opinion but stay confident with your own. Also, don\u2019t forget to listen to make sure you don\u2019t miss anything and lose credibility! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
