You might be therefore feeling stressed. It may also mean to be able to do something under pressure is when you try to do something when it\u2019s stressful circumstances. \u201cListen, I can\u2019t go grocery shopping. I\u2019m sorry\u2013I\u2019m under a lot of pressure at work and don\u2019t have time.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Under one\u2019s breath<\/em>: You are saying something quietly, something you may not want the other person to hear. It may be rude or just something that you want to keep to yourself. \u201cShe heard most of what he said, but what she didn\u2019t hear was the unfriendly remark he said under his breath.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Under the influence<\/em>: This is a very common chunk, and it usually talks about driving under the influence of alcohol. \u201cHe got arrested that night because he was under the influence. He will have to go to a class to make up for this.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"height:53px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Other Phrases In This Category<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are other commonly used chunks or phrases that fall into this category.<\/p>\n<p>You may hear them used often in conversation, and so it can be helpful to know what they are and what they mean. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Below zero:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>This is the freezing temperature. You\u2019ll hear it used a lot in winter or colder climates. Sometimes we say sub zero. \u201cIt\u2019s below zero outside today. I am not going anywhere! I am going to stay in my pajamas and watch movies.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Underneath it all<\/em>: This is used quite often and means getting to the heart of the issue. Something may appear one way, but actually be another. It\u2019s kind of like at the end of the day, or the very essence of something. \u201cHe can seem like a difficult person at times, but underneath it all he\u2019s a real sweetheart.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Beneath me<\/em>: This isn\u2019t a very complimentary or positive one, but it\u2019s quite common. It means that you are \u201cabove\u201d something or too good for something. If people use this to refer to somebody it may often mean spoiled. \u201cI\u2019m sorry but I\u2019m not going to file papers. That\u2019s beneath me at this point at it\u2019s not in my job description.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"height:53px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Could you add in underneath\/below then try to use them interchangeably?  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the most part, no\u2013that\u2019s why it\u2019s important to learn in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/idioms-natural-conversations-awkward\/\">idioms,<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/idioms-natural-conversations-awkward\/\"> <\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/idioms-natural-conversations-awkward\/\">phrases, and chunks in this way. <\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"height:53px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, these are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-chunks-no-prepositions\/\">idioms\/chunks that are useful,<\/a> and you can memorize them and listen to how they are used in conversations. <\/p>\n<p>You will likely see that \u201cunder\u201d is the most commonly used out of all these.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many which can be used, but now you have an understanding of how this works.<\/p>\n<p> Try using them yourself and see how it goes!<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:53px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>If you have any questions, please leave them below in the comments section.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll get back to you as soon as we can. <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you struggle when you try to understand tricky grammar points in English like \u201cunder\u201d or \u201cbeneath\u201d or \u201cbelow\u201d?
