I have a question for you. I recently watched the first baseball game ever in my life. I really enjoyed it ( GO CUBS!). I just realized \u201cballpark\u201d has an original meaning of a baseball field. I\u2019ve also heard that \u201ctouch base\u201d is a baseball phrase. All About The Sports<\/strong><\/p>\n

The question is about baseball idioms, but it doesn\u2019t just stop there.<\/p>\n

So when you look at the term \u201cballpark\u201d it\u2019s an approximation\u2013it\u2019s often used with a figure to estimate the actual number.<\/p>\n

M: How much will it cost?<\/p>\n

L: I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

M: Well give me a ballpark figure.<\/p>\n

L: Ok. Around 500 dollars.<\/p>\n

Our listener wants to know more sports phrases and idioms, so today will be a fun episode giving you some!<\/p>\n

There are a lot of idioms, terms, and vocabulary words that center around sports.<\/p>\n

This may have much to do with the fact that sports are a big part of the culture in the US.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

A Big Part of The Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why are sports in so many of our idioms in English? <\/p>\n

Sports are so ingrained in our culture and when something is in the culture, it seeps into the language. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to get these idioms<\/a> because it shows you follow along with the culture as well. <\/p>\n

Even if you aren\u2019t a sports fan, you can appreciate the use of these idioms.<\/p>\n

These are terms that are truly a part of everyday conversations.<\/p>\n

These are the things that you can bring up or use in conversation that help you to connect and talk with natives.<\/p>\n

When it\u2019s a part of the culture, then it\u2019s something that you may use quite often once you get used to it.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Common Sports Terms<\/strong><\/p>\n

It helps to see what the most common sports terms are, and to see how they are used.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to look at some common sports terminology, and then look at how they can be used in everyday conversation. <\/p>\n

\u2013A low blow<\/em>:<\/strong> This comes from boxing, and it means something REALLY too rude or mean. Maybe you\u2019re arguing with someone and they say something that goes too far. This is a low blow.<\/p>\n

M: They were fighting and then she brought up how he failed his LSAT.<\/p>\n

L: Ooo low blow.<\/p>\n

M: I know.<\/p>\n

-Out of left field:<\/strong> This comes from baseball, and it means out of nowhere. You may hear something or learn something that hits you rather unexpectedly. It\u2019s usually a surprise that you were not prepared for. <\/p>\n

M: Lindsay- I can\u2019t make lunch today because I already ate.<\/p>\n

L: Well that was out of left field. I thought we had plans.<\/p>\n

M: Sorry!<\/p>\n

\u2013Slam dunk<\/em>:<\/strong> This comes from basketball, and it means that something went really well. You feel that you mastered something or that it went better than expected. <\/p>\n

M: I got a 90 percent on my test!<\/p>\n

L: Wow, slam dunk!<\/p>\n

\u2013Have someone in your corner<\/em>:<\/strong> This comes from boxing, and it means that someone helps you between rounds. It ultimately means that someone is on your side, particularly during a time of need. <\/p>\n

M: Lindsay, I\u2019m so lucky to have you in my corner. I couldn\u2019t do this without you.<\/p>\n

L: Anytime Michelle<\/p>\n

There are SO many sports idioms, and these are just a few.<\/p>\n

As you can see, you can keep going with these if you really want to.<\/p>\n

This is a great way to become part of the everyday conversation<\/a>, and to practice using common terms and phrases. <\/p>\n

Roleplay To Help<\/strong><\/p>\n

As always, looking at a role play can really help you to see how this works in action.<\/p>\n

This role play incorporates several different sports terms and phrases, and it can really help you to see how it sounds in conversation.<\/p>\n

In this situation, Lindsay and Michelle are deciding what to do together on a snow day.<\/p>\n

L: So what do you want to do?<\/p>\n

M: Watch TV.<\/p>\n

L: Oh you watch too much TV.<\/p>\n

M: No I don\u2019t. <\/p>\n

L: Give me a ballpark figure<\/strong>. HOw much do you watch in a day?<\/p>\n

M: Just an hour! <\/p>\n

L: Ok. Well I wish you would want to go out and do something instead of being lazy.<\/p>\n

M: That\u2019s a low blow <\/strong>Lindsay. YOu know I\u2019m tired. Fine. Let\u2019s go skiing.<\/p>\n

L: That\u2019s out of left field. <\/strong>You hate skiing.<\/p>\n

M: But I\u2019ll try it to prove that I\u2019m not lazy. <\/p>\n

L: Ok I\u2019ll be in your corner <\/strong>to help you.<\/p>\n

M: Thanks. I\u2019ll be a slam dunk<\/strong>. You\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n

As you can see, there are so many different sports terms used in the English vocabulary.<\/p>\n

Try using them and see how they help you with everyday conversation and with making important connections.<\/p>\n

You can tell a lot about a culture by the language that is used. <\/p>\n

Since there are so many sports idioms in American English, you can tell that sports are important in the US. <\/p>\n
