IF present simple, THEN future simple, or IF present simple, THEN will and the infinitive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1200-how-to-not-get-bogged-down-with-conditionals\/\">Learn more here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples include: \u201cIf I see her at the show, I will let you know.\u201d or \u201cI will    e-mail you the directions if you need them.&nbsp;\u201c<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Second Conditional:<\/strong> This was the lottery conditional. This is focused on the hypothetical, which is very unlikely to happen. Whereas the first conditional is a real possibility, this is more unlikely. Here it is broken down as If+ past simple+would +base verb. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1211-the-lottery-conditional\/\">Learn more about this conditional here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples include: \u201cIf I were an actress I would only star in scary movies.\u201d&nbsp;or \u201cI would be a doctor if I didn\u2019t hate the site of blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Third Conditional:<\/strong> These are also all about the hypothetical and are about reflection. This is focused on how things could be different in the past, such as life or plans in general. It is broken down as If + Past Perfect + Would + have + past participle. This can also be flipped a bit and work. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1219-if-vin-and-georgia-hadnt-gone-dancing\/\">Go here to listen to this episode.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples include: \u201cIf you had watched the movie you would have known the surprise ending.\u201d or \u201cShe would have gone to a different school if she had gotten a scholarship.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Zero Conditional:<\/strong>  This is all about facts, directions,  and general information. This is the truth and you know it to be. It can be broken down as If clause, Main clause \u2013 both in PRESENT SIMPLE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples include: \u201cIf he forgets to make dinner, we go to a restaurant.\u201d or \u201cIf the weather is bad, I stay inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you have questions listen to the specific episodes because they go deeper into the conditional. We wanted to combine them all together!<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:52px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Roleplay To Help With Understanding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since this is a tricky topic, a roleplay can really come in handy here.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s use them all in a roleplay!<\/p>\n<p>In this situation, Lindsay and Michelle are reminiscing about their grad school days.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cOh man, I loved the Ole\u2019 Pineapple Bar. Should we go there again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cOh no. <strong>If I smell beer, I get sick!\u201d (zero)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cOh no! <strong>If I were you, I\u2019d avoid that new bar on fifth<\/strong>. It stinks!\u201d<strong> (second)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cHa ha okay. Do you ever think about how life can be so different depending on your decisions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cAll the time. <strong>If I hadn\u2019t met you, I wouldn\u2019t have become friends with Amy.  (3rd) <\/strong>I can\u2019t believe she got me my job!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cWow that\u2019s so true. <strong>If I hadn\u2019t met Amy, I would probably have been so lonely! (3rd) <\/strong>She\u2019s my best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cShe\u2019s great. Okay here\u2019s the deal. <strong>If she calls us later, we will drive 2 hours to see her\u2026tonight!\u201d (1st)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cDone!\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> It can be easy to feel nervous about conditionals and English grammar in general. <\/p>\n<p>Think of when you can use each conditional in your own life and in your conversations. You want to take some time before entering a conversation or each day to brainstorm how you might use these grammar forms in your daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Make a list of times when you may use it and try to use one a day.<\/p>\n<p>These can be a tricky aspect of conversation in English, but the more that you practice the easier it will get.<\/p>\n<p>You can also improve very specific aspects of your grammar to increase your IELTS score.
