I could also really use your help with the word \u201cwould\u201d as well.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Thank you very much!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sharhzrad<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Some Background On This<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a great question from the listener, because \u201cwouldn\u2019t you know it\u201d comes up often in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>This phrase essentially means you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1270-one-dad-phrase-that-you-can-use-to-show-surprise-in-english\/\">surprised<\/a> or you can\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n<p>This is usually referring to something that happened or something that you were caught off guard by or surprised by. <\/p>\n<p>We have done a couple of episodes on this in the past that can be quite helpful to review for reference. <\/p>\n<p>Check out the following episodes for reference and more about this concept. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/aee-1240-become-storyteller-in-english-all-ears-english\/\">Keep Your Audience Focused On You! How To Use This Phrase To Describe What Brings You Happiness<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see there are so many uses for this word.<\/p>\n<p>These episodes will prove to be great points of reference, and they can give you great starting points with learning about how to use this word. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Uses For This Word In Conversation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The word \u201cwould\u201d is used in so many different aspects of conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding how it is used and what the various ways are to use it can be really helpful.<\/p>\n<p>Though it may seem confusing that this word is used so much, understanding some of the uses will help you tremendously. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Hypothetical situations<\/em><\/strong>: It\u2019s something that you are speaking about in theory or in a way that says that you\u2019re putting thought into it. You may have wished for this or considered it, and so you are now talking about it in a proactive or wishful way. You might say \u201cThey would order 10 cars if they had the money!\u201d <\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Ordering at a restaurant<\/em><\/strong>: This works well when you are talking about what you would like. You are placing your order and therefore speaking up for your choice in this setting. You might say \u201cI\u2019d like the chicken sandwich please!\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Talk about the past<\/em><\/strong>: This is talking about something that  may have happened previously. You would use \u201cwould\u201d for something that did happen, and then use \u201cwouldn\u2019t\u201d for something that didn\u2019t happen. There are always things that happened or didn\u2019t happen in the past that you can talk about. If you are talking about something that did happen, you could say \u201cWhen I was a kid, I would pretend I was a teacher.\u201d If you were talking about something that didn\u2019t happen, you could say \u201cHe was so angry that he wouldn\u2019t even talk to me.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In general  would is used in the following way: would + base verb.<\/p>\n<p>You could say something like \u201cI would like the steak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Try to remember this rule for usage, and then try out the examples above in  how to put it into conversation.  <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:37px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Focusing On Wouldn\u2019t In Phrases<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re looking at a basic overview so that you know how to use this word in conversation.<\/p>\n<p>As is the way with all things within AEE, we like you to learn things in chunks.<\/p>\n<p>So today we\u2019re going to do phrase and chunks with the word \u201cwouldn\u2019t\u201d as a starting point. <\/p>\n<p>This is a word you will find often gets neglected because you likely tend to fous only on the word \u201cwould\u201d first and foremost.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s take a look at how you might use \u201cwouldn\u2019t\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/start-english-conversations-working\/\">conversation<\/a>, and how this can work for you. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>I wouldn\u2019t put it past someone<\/em><\/strong>: This is essentially saying that you believe that someone would do something. They may have done things like this in the past, and so you wouldn\u2019t be surprised if they did it again. This isn\u2019t usually a positive, though the tone you use with it matters greatly. You could say something like \u201cDid she really skip class?\u201d \u201cI wouldn\u2019t put it past her. You know she hates school.\u201d <\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Wouldn\u2019t be surprised<\/em><\/strong>: This is similar to the last one, but it can be much more general in nature. This is something that you can use when referring to almost anything that you don\u2019t find to be surprising in nature.  You could say \u201cIs it going to snow tomorrow?\u201d \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be surprised. The weather has been so unpredictable that nothing will shock me now.\u201d <\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Someone wouldn\u2019t hurt a fly<\/em><\/strong>: This is saying that this person wouldn\u2019t do anything to hurt anybody. They are very kind or gentle in nature. They are the last person you would expect to do something unkind or hurt anybody in any way. This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean hurt physically, but it can be emotionally or mentally too. It just speaks to their kind nature overall. You might say \u201cI think Paul said some pretty rude things about his boss today.\u201d \u201cAre you kidding? No way. He\u2019s so nice. He wouldn\u2019t hurt a fly!\u201d <\/li>\n<li><strong><em>I wouldn\u2019t count on it<\/em><\/strong>: This means that you don\u2019t hope for something or expect it. You may wish for it or hope for it, but you\u2019re just not sure it will actually happen. You might say something like \u201cDo you think the noise will stop soon?\u201d \u201cI wouldn\u2019t count on it. These people party until 3am at least!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are some of the more common phrases using the word \u201cwouldn\u2019t\u201d in conversation<\/p>\n<p>You are likely to hear these a lot, and so it can be quite helpful to know what they are and how they are used.<\/p>\n<p>Practice using them so you can see how these phrases work and feel. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Roleplay To Help<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Since this is a word that is used so often in conversation, a roleplay can be quite helpful.<\/p>\n<p>In this roleplay, Lindsay got her phone stolen in class and she and Michelle are trying to guess who did it.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cSo I came back and wouldn\u2019t you know it? My phone was gone!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cOh no! Who do you think took it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t put it past Emily. She likes playing jokes\u2013maybe she will give it back tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t count on it. I don\u2019t think someone takes a phone for more than 5 minutes if they are just joking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cYou think it\u2019s really gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be surprised. But you never know. Ask around and go to lost and found!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cYou\u2019re right. Besides, Emily is a practical joker but she wouldn\u2019t hurt a fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Would is an extremely dynamic word. Don\u2019t be intimidated by this aspect of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts\/ielts-energy-673-say-grammar-wrong-ielts-speaking\/\">English grammar.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We went through some basics today so that you can see some of the more common uses for this word.<\/p>\n<p>Listen for these usages in conversation, and learn in chunks and expressions.
