I hear certain phrases around such as \u201cI\u2019m loving it\u201d and I\u2019m pretty sure that is wrong.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Can you please help me to understand?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Thank you very much,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Gspindola (From Instagram)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Breaking This Down<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is such a huge topic, and it\u2019s an important question that you may have had.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s start by looking at what is a stative verb? <\/p>\n<p>This is not an action like other types of verbs. <\/p>\n<p>This is actually more how something is or how it feels\u2013it\u2019s like a state of mind!<\/p>\n<p>For example when you say love in certain ways, it\u2019s not an action the same way that run is.<\/p>\n<p>There is some overlap when a stative verb has two meanings\u2013then it may be both stative and action. <\/p>\n<p>The thing is generally the idea is that because stative verbs are states and not actions, they can\u2019t be used with an \u201c-ing\u201d ending.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at something like \u201cI\u2019m running\u201d which is dynamic, that\u2019s very different than \u201cI\u2019m loving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consider if any of these sound normal to you as a basis, as sometimes seeing something in print can help to demonstrate what works and what doesn\u2019t. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What NOT to say:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m loving sushi!\u201d<\/em><\/strong> This sounds funny if you are just talking about your feeling for sushi, but we\u2019ll focus more on this one a bit more later.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m having one brother.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> This is very odd, as it\u2019s not continuous and it just doesn\u2019t make sense or flow.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m owning two sweaters.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> You wouldn\u2019t say this even though sweaters is plural. It just doesn\u2019t make sense or fit here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However the rules seem to have started changing a little bit over time.<\/p>\n<p>The rules were broken and now you will often see some stative verbs are being used with \u201c-ing\u201d in conversation. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Looking At Common Ones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are some common stative verbs, and they are worth looking at.<\/p>\n<p>There is definitely enough material to warrant doing another episode, but you can come away from this one having a good general understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The main point to take away is that sometimes stative verbs can be used with \u201c-ing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of common stative verbs that you have probably seen or heard, and they can be a great starting point.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Love<\/em><\/strong>: You\u2019ve probably heard the McDonald\u2019s phrase \u201cI\u2019m loving it!\u201d People use love as a stative verb more than you might think. It may sound extreme, but it\u2019s more enthusiastic and more current. YOu might say \u201cWow Lindsay, I\u2019m loving your new haircut!\u201d It takes the word \u201clove\u201d and moves it to a whole new enthusiastic and very current way of saying something. <\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Like<\/em><\/strong>: It\u2019s along the same lines as love, but perhaps not quite as strong. It still conveys that you enjoy or appreciate something, but perhaps not as enthusiastically. You could say \u201cI\u2019m liking these jeans way more than I thought I would. Maybe I\u2019ll get them!\u201d <\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Hate<\/em><\/strong>: This is of course the opposite end of the spectrum, but it can still be show an impact. You feel strongly about your dislike about the subject matter, and so you are using this version of it to convey that. You could say \u201cI\u2019m hating the subway right now. It is so full and always late.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have you used any of these in conversation in English?<\/p>\n<p>How do you think they sound?<\/p>\n<p>These aren\u2019t really something that you would put into writing, but they work well for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts\/ielts-energy-413-avoid-speaking-6-informal-fillers\/\">informal conversations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These are current and show enthusiasm, and so they can help with making a connection. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Roleplay To Help<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As with anything, a roleplay can help and you will find this to be very useful here.<\/p>\n<p>In this roleplay, Lindsay and Michelle are talking about their birthday plans for a joint party.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cShould we have it at that new Italian place down the street?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cNo, I <em>hate<\/em> that place. It\u2019s too fancy shmancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cOkay. What about the sushi place? Look at the menu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cOooo I\u2019m <em>loving <\/em>this design. This place looks nice!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cYou\u2019re liking what you see? Good!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cYeah I do like it. Oh no, but I\u2019m hating the prices. Yikes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay: \u201cI know, sorry. It\u2019s not that bad right? I really love this place. Think about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle: \u201cYeah you\u2019re right. Let\u2019s do it.\u201d <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes the way people speak changes.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps McDonald\u2019s is responsible for the change with the famous phrase \u201cI\u2019m loving it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is a great way to connect with people, and we only touched on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/english-holiday-conversations\/\">important aspect of conversation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not everything has to be perfect, so take this knowledge and apply it to your conversations in English.<\/p>\n<p>This is a fun and really animated part of conversation, so it can be great to play around with.<\/p>\n<p>Want to keep learning grammar?
