Where will you see e.g. and i.e. in English?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Can I use e.g. and i.e. to express examples and further explanations?<\/p>\n

Or is this too academic, or scientific, nerdy, magazine-publishing only?<\/p>\n

Or would this make the Examiner roll his eyes and say, \u201cUgh, it\u2019s one of those guys?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is a great question because we see \u201ce.g.\u201d and \u201ci.e.\u201d used often in scientific journals, magazines and articles.<\/p>\n

However, IELTS Writing is very different from normal academic writing.<\/a><\/p>\n

What do e.g. and i.e. mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

They are both Latin and are interchangeable.<\/p>\n

e.g. (exempli gratia):<\/strong> \u201cfor example\u201d<\/p>\n

i.e. (id est):<\/strong> \u201cthat is\u201d or \u201cnamely\u201d<\/p>\n

They can both be used to mean \u201cfor example.\u201d<\/p>\n

We use these often in regular academic writing.<\/p>\n

Why should you not use them on IELTS?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

These replace a transition word<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You need those transitions in order to get a 7 or higher on the Cohesion\/Coherence score.<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s better to use a band 6 transition like, \u201cfor example,\u201d rather than \u201ce.g.\u201d or \u201ci.e.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, there are higher level transitions that you can use instead.<\/p>\n
