Today we answer a 3 Keys IELTS<\/a> student\u2019s question asking us to recommend a movie with a lot of slang.<\/p>\n

A great example we both love is the film Ghostbusters.<\/p>\n

It is full of slang, and was even the source of some new slang phrases.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll explain the native idioms and slang<\/a> from this film that you can use on the IELTS exam.<\/p>\n

Watching movies in English is a great way to improve your overall English fluency.<\/a><\/p>\n

It can also give you a boost for IELTS!<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

This is toast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Saying something is \u201ctoast\u201d originated with an impromptu Bill Murray line in Ghostbusters.<\/p>\n

Toast<\/strong>: tired, no longer functioning\/broken, ruined, done, finished <\/p>\n

\n

This equipment is toast. It\u2019s no longer working.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

You could use this on Speaking Part 2 <\/a>to describe a time you were tired or out of energy.<\/p>\n

A Part 1 question might ask if you sleep in or wake up early.<\/p>\n

If I sleep in, my entire day is toast.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It can also be used as a filler phrase<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If describing a trip with friends, you could talk about splitting up to do different things.<\/p>\n

Half of us wanted to see a museum and the rest of us didn\u2019t, so we split up.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Drop everything!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you stop an action to do something else, you drop everything!<\/p>\n

Part 2 might ask you to describe a time something went wrong.<\/p>\n

Then I dropped everything because I had to rush to the hospital!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Speaking Part 1 <\/a>often has questions about describing your routine or different habits.<\/p>\n

After you talk about your usual routine, you could say:<\/p>\n

Go for broke<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Go for broke<\/strong>: doing something with full energy and commitment<\/p>\n

Use this on IELTS when talking about dreams and goals.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to get my PhD and work as a surgeon in Canada.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I feel funky<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To feel funky<\/strong>: to feel a bit off or weird for any reason<\/p>\n

I feel funky. <\/p>\n

I think I have a headache coming on!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This can be used anywhere on the Speaking exam<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You may get questions about reasons people should or shouldn\u2019t visit a doctor.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think a person should drop everything and go to the doctor because their stomach feels a bit funky.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

<\/div>\n

Being fuzzy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This word has a few meanings, but one idiom is to be fuzzy on something.<\/p>\n

Being fuzzy: being unclear or unsure<\/p>\n

I\u2019m fuzzy on the rules for this game.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s a word in a question you don\u2019t know, ask!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always better to ask for clarification if you\u2019re unsure.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

I\u2019m fuzzy on the word accommodation. <\/p>\n

Can you tell me what that means?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Otherwise, you might answer the wrong question!<\/p>\n

This will lower your Fluency, Coherence and Vocabulary scores<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You need to use a variety of vocabulary to get a 7 or higher on IELTS Speaking.<\/p>\n

This is best accomplished by using informal slang on Part 1.<\/a><\/p>\n
