It\u2019s 100% guaranteed.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Which clich\u00e9s should you avoid on IELTS?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>piece of cake<\/li>\n<li>raining cats and dogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are in every ESL textbook.<\/p>\n<p>They are very commonly used among students.<\/p>\n<p>You should, therefore, avoid them on the IELTS exam.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Idiom #1: Don\u2019t reinvent the wheel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is an idiom that is perfect in this situation.<\/p>\n<p>We already have a wheel \u2013 you can\u2019t reinvent it.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, we already have transition phrases \u2013 you can\u2019t invent new ones!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>When it comes to transition phrases, you shouldn\u2019t reinvent the wheel.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This idiom was on a list of clich\u00e9s, but it isn\u2019t common and overused, so you can definitely use it on IELTS.<\/p>\n<p>The key isn\u2019t whether they are common among native speakers, it\u2019s whether they are common among students.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Idiom #2: All that glitters isn\u2019t gold<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We use this to talk about something that isn\u2019t as good as it looks.<\/p>\n<p>We also use the idiom \u201ctoo good to be true\u201d in a similar way.<\/p>\n<p>Use this if your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/ielts\/ielts-video-describing-physical-appearance-and-personality-on-ielts-speaking-part-2\/\">Speaking Part 2 question<\/a> asks you to describe something you bought but didn\u2019t use.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Last year I spent $500 on a smartwatch because it was sleek and beautiful, but then it didn\u2019t work! All that glitters isn\u2019t gold.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Idiom #3: Don\u2019t get your knickers in a twist<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Calm down<\/li>\n<li>Chill out<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t get excited<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This expression is very fun and will likely make the Examiner chuckle.<\/p>\n<p>Knickers means underpants in British English.<\/p>\n<p>This would be great if you\u2019re telling a story about someone getting upset.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Then I said, \u2018Don\u2019t get your knickers in a twist.
