My name is Roberto, and I\u2019m from the Dominican Republic but now I\u2019m living in Canada. I have a question about how the word \u201cup\u201d is used in some phrases. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I\u2019ve seen this used a few times such as in something like \u201cburn it up.\u201d I would like to go deeper on this and understand how this works. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Thank you in advance for your help! <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Some Background On This To Understand<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p> It\u2019s true, you will see the word \u201cup\u201d used quite frequently in certain phrasal verbs. <\/p>\n<p>In the example \u201cburn it up\u201d was used, but that\u2019s not necessarily one that you hear very often. <\/p>\n<p>It may mean to upset someone, but this is a bit unclear. <\/p>\n<p>You might say something like \u201cburn up\u201d which could apply to something like sunburns. <\/p>\n<p>You could say something like \u201cI always burn up when I stay out in the sun for too long.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>You may even apply it to talking about when you get too hot in a certain situation. <\/p>\n<p>You could say something like \u201cI\u2019m burning up, let\u2019s go inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may even say it about something with a real fire like \u201cI\u2019m going to burn up my old yearbook so I never have to think of high school again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>We did an episode about a usage for the word \u201cup\u201d in the past, and that\u2019s something to check out for a little help. <\/p>\n<p>AEE 363: \u201cGrow\u201d Versus \u201cGrow Up\u201d: How to Tell the Difference in English https:\/\/www.allearsenglish.com\/grow-versus-grow-up-how-to-tell-the-difference-in-english\/ <\/p>\n<p>We have talked about phrasal verbs a lot in the past, because it\u2019s an important topic. <\/p>\n<p>Today we are going to give you some unique ones that will make you sound very fluent and natural\u2013we can always use more phrasal verbs! <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Some Common Phrasal Verbs Using The Word Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>So you may already have a bit of an understanding about phrasal verbs, but we\u2019re going to look at the ones that use the word \u201cup\u201d specifically today. <\/p>\n<p>You might be surprised at just how many there are, and these can be great to use in conversation in the right settings. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Clam up<\/em><\/strong>: This means you don\u2019t say anything. You might even think of the visual of a clam closing. In this situation, you may not speak because you feel worried, scared, nervous, or something like that. You could say \u201cRachel clammed up after the presentation because she felt it didn\u2019t go well.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Shake up<\/em><\/strong>: This means to freak someone out or make them uneasy or upset. This reaction is usually because they are very surprised by something, and this is their reaction to it. You might hear \u201cTommy shook me up when he told me that his company was going bankrupt.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Crank up<\/em><\/strong>: This means to increase something\u2019s intensity. You might hear this about the volume of something you are listening to. It can also apply to the energy you are putting into something like exercise, air conditioning or even heat. You might ask \u201cCan you crank up the radio? I can\u2019t hear a thing!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Free up<\/em><\/strong>: To take away or clear an obstacle so something else may be used or done. You may try to free up your time or free up something so that you can get past whatever is standing in your way. You could say \u201cCan we free up some space on the table for this new computer?\u201d Another good example is \u201cI need to free up some time tomorrow for my meeting.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Touch up<\/em><\/strong>: This is to improve something, usually in a small way. It may be a touch up to paint in the house or something as simple as touching up your makeup. You could say \u201cI need to touch up my mascara before we leave.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t get intimidated with phrasal verbs, because they can be great to use.
