I love your show and am so grateful for everything I learn! I am coming to you with a question that I am hoping you can help me with. I\u2019m struggling every day with certain terms that I hear. I hear up and down, in and out, and things like that in conversation all the time. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I always confuse them and feel unsure about which ones to use. For example I hear things like \u201ccheck in\u201d, \u201cprint out\u201d, \u201cwrite down\u201d, and \u201ccaught up.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are a lot of things covered on this episode, but it all starts with understanding the basics. <\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to look at this as terms that relate to travel or any part of the process of getting from one destination to another. <\/p>\n

So let\u2019s start by understanding, what is a phrasal verb? <\/p>\n

Simply put, this is a verb with a particle. <\/p>\n

Adverbial particles are an important concept to understand, and there are a few common ones that you likely use all the time. <\/p>\n

Adverbial Particles include words such as: Up, in, on, off, down, out, through. <\/p>\n

Then there are prepositional particles such as: at, for, to, with.<\/p>\n

There are many ways to study phrasal verbs, but this is a good starting point. <\/p>\n

You could study them by verb as one approach that works really well. <\/p>\n

If you went this route, you could look at one verb such as \u201ccheck\u201d, and then you will find that there are plenty of examples of this. <\/p>\n

You would see examples just with this one verb such as: <\/p>\n

Check in <\/p>\n

Check out <\/p>\n

Check up <\/p>\n

Check on <\/p>\n

Check through <\/p>\n

Check for <\/p>\n

Check with Check over <\/p>\n

However though these all have the same verb within them, each phrase has completely different meanings.<\/p>\n

It can sometimes be difficult to keep these all straight, but each one makes up an entirely new verb. <\/p>\n

Each one has a different meaning and a different use in conversation. <\/p>\n

It may feel as though it\u2019s hard to keep them all straight, but just take it one at a time. <\/p>\n

You may find it easier to learn them by topic or situation that each one would be used in. <\/p>\n

So if you look at a phrasal verb you want to break it down into smaller and easier parts. <\/p>\n

This is how you can start to understand how each one works from the lists above. <\/p>\n

They all serve different purposes, they all contribute to a sentence and a conversation, and they all work in slightly different ways. <\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to look at a couple of common examples that you are likely to hear and use all the time. <\/p>\n

These examples are all common when it comes to talking to travel, as that is the focus today. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s a great way to approach this is to go with some of the most common ones, and then you can see what you are most likely to try out yourself. <\/p>\n
