I have a question that I\u2019ve been struggling to figure out whether it is right or wrong. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s about the word *used* or \u201cused to\u201d. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure how to use it if it\u2019s in the past tense. <\/p>\n

Take these for example: I\u2019m not used to seeing him like this. (present) <\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t used to seeing him like this. <\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t used to be like this. (Wrong, I think. If it is indeed wrong, how do you use this phrasal verb in this form?)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Don\u2019t say \u201cused to could!\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Native speakers in different parts of the United States make regionally accepted grammar errors.<\/p>\n

In the rural area where Aubrey grew up in Idaho, people sometimes say \u201cused to could.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

We used to could turn left there, but we can\u2019t now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is incorrect grammar!<\/p>\n

You will hear natives make grammar errors often<\/a>, and you don\u2019t want to let it confuse you!<\/p>\n

Connection not perfection<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Natives make grammar errors all the time!<\/p>\n

This is especially common in areas with less educated populations.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also hear verb tense errors like, \u201cWe was\u201d or \u201cThey was.\u201d<\/p>\n

In parts of Pennsylvania, instead of \u201cguys\u201d or \u201cpeople\u201d they\u2019ll often say \u201cyuns.\u201d<\/p>\n

#1: Speaking<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When spoken, \u201cused to\u201d and \u201cuse to\u201d sound the same.<\/p>\n

There is no difference in the pronunciation.<\/a><\/p>\n

For \u201cused to,\u201d we combine the \u201cd\u201d at the end of \u201cused\u201d and the \u201ct\u201d at the beginning of \u201cto.\u201d<\/p>\n

Therefore, it sounds the same as \u201cuse to.\u201d<\/p>\n

We are used to going to that restaurant because it\u2019s our favorite.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

You must use connected speech<\/a>, or allision, for the \u201cd\u201d and \u201ct\u201d sounds.<\/p>\n

The \u201ct\u201d is more powerful, so it takes over.<\/p>\n

Use to<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This form of the phrasal verb <\/a>you will use when the verb contains \u201cdid.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always in the past, and is something that happened in the past but doesn\u2019t anymore.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t use to eat really well, but now I do.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t use to exercise as often as I do now.<\/p>\n

I did use to wake up early, but now I don\u2019t!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
