Mistake #1: Not knowing the scoring system<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you are writing essays without understanding the scoring system, they will likely get a 6 or lower.<\/p>\n

Sometimes 3 Keys students<\/a> write an essay for feedback before finishing the Writing module.<\/p>\n

When this happens, they make mistakes that lower their Task Response<\/a> and Cohesion\/Coherence scores<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You can improve your vocabulary and grammar on your own.<\/p>\n

What is needed for a 7+ on Task Response?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You must stick to the question.<\/p>\n

Your reasons must directly answer the question in the topic.<\/p>\n

Additionally, each reason must be fully supported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All details and examples must directly support your reasons.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t have time on IELTS essays to go on tangents.<\/p>\n

If you do, you likely won\u2019t fully support your ideas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What is needed for a 7+ on Cohesion\/Coherence?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You must use a wide variety of high level transitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many students use very common linking words like firstly, also, next and then.<\/p>\n

These are low level, repetitive and boring!<\/p>\n

These can\u2019t get you a 7+ on Cohesion\/Coherence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead, use less common transitions<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Additionally, your essay must be well-organized.<\/p>\n

Each paragraph must have a clear central theme.<\/p>\n

Mistake #2: Weak body paragraphs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A body paragraph is like a funnel that starts wide at the top.<\/p>\n

It gets more narrow as it goes on.<\/p>\n

Everything must be linked together logically.<\/a><\/p>\n

Your ideas must be simple and clear.<\/p>\n

Every sentence has to support what came before it.<\/p>\n

The structure must be clear.<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t have unrelated sentences that don\u2019t support your reason.<\/a><\/p>\n

Your reasons must be clearly and fully supported.<\/p>\n

When brainstorming, think of ideas with clear supporting examples.<\/p>\n

Mistake #3: Too many ideas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If students don\u2019t brainstorm before writing, they often write body paragraphs with too many reasons.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you include multiple reasons, you don\u2019t have time to support them all.<\/p>\n

Every reason you provide for your opinion must be fully supported!<\/p>\n
